STPA Hands-on Practicum

We’ll apply STPA together to a real-world system. The instructor will guide you as you work with other participants in breakout groups. You can ask the instructor questions at any time. After each step, we will review the results in class with instructor comments and feedback. At the end, we'll compare findings to those from a real-world system.

The class will be recorded for use in future classes. You may opt out of the video use for future classes.

The workshop is designed for participants from any industry. No special industry knowledge is required.

Prerequisite: You must be familiar with the basics of STPA described in chapter 2 of the STPA Handbook. For example, you must know the four parts of a UCA, what a process model is, and the difference between downward and upward arrows in a control structure. The workshop is not intended to repeat the introductory content of the handbook. The workshop is designed to build practical skills after you have read the handbook. It is recommended, though not required, to complete the introductory "System Safety and STPA" class first.

We'll meet virtually to complete these exercises on May 12 and 14, from 10am to 2pm Eastern time (UTC-4).
